Devotional Romans 13:1
Pastor Brian’s “Every So Often” Devotional
November 8, 2012
(Romans 13:1) Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.
The esteemed Dutch theologian Abraham Kuyper once wrote: “There is not one square inch of the entire creation about which Jesus Christ does not cry out, ‘This is mine! This belongs to me!’” Pastor Kuyper could never be accused of being apolitical; he served as Prime Minister of the Netherlands for a period of four years! But in the midst of being a politician/ statesman, he never lost sight of the reality of God’s sovereignty in national affairs.
Last Tuesday U.S. citizens (and probably a few who weren’t!) engaged in a great liberty that has been afforded to us as a people –we voted to choose our nation’s leaders, including the man who would hold the highest office of the land, the President of the United States. For many believers, I’m sure that the outcome of the election was not what you believed to be best for our nation or most favorable in upholding basic Christian values. Disappointment in these types of situations is understandable.
But as Christ followers our hope must never be placed in whether a particular political “brand” is in office or not. Our hope is in the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Our hope is in the One who surveys it all and sees His plan unfolding through the ages. We rarely understand His plan as its being unfurled. (If we’re honest, we often don’t even like His plan, if it results in our discomfort or pain!) But His plan it is, and holding on to that truth brings us great peace in the midst of whatever chaos this world may bring. As the well-worn adage proclaims: We don’t know what the future holds; but we know Who holds the future!
