Devotional Deuteronomy 34:3-8

(Deuteronomy 34:3-8 )Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is across from Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land of Gilead as far as Dan, 2 all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, 3 the South, and the plain of the Valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar.

Thus begins the record of Moses’ death. He would step into eternity from the top of Mount Nebo, on the Eastern side of the Jordan River. This supernatural tour of the Holy Land would be the last thing Moses’ eyes would see in this life.

Remember that Moses was not permitted to enter the Promised Land because of the events that took place at Kadesh (seeNumbers 20 ). He had even asked God at a later time to rescind that judgment, but God was firm that Joshua, not Moses, would lead the children of Israel into the land.

What God did was show Moses the entire land before he died. There is no mountain in modern-day Jordan that permits a complete view of the land from the listed boundaries, so what exactly was taking place here? In a final act of God’s grace to the man, Moses, the Lord gave a miraculous viewing of the eventual fulfillment of His promise to His people. Moe was able to close his eyes in this life with that last vivid reminder that his days had been lived in service to a God who keeps His covenant. And then Moses stepped into the reality of the greatest promise of all – eternity in His presence!
